Studio Tomo is a brand consultancy that partners with established and emerging leaders building a more just, fair, and interdependent world.

We help organizations communicate who they are (and why anyone should care), and bring their brands to life through language, design, and marketing.

Studio Tomo is a collective of independent brand and campaign strategists, designers, developers, writers, researchers, publicists, and marketers founded and led by James Wu. Most recently, James was a Partner and Head of Planning at A—B Partners where he helped build brands and campaigns for organizations working on racial equity, economic justice, climate disinformation, restorative philanthropy, maternal health, and gender justice.

Previously, James was a Senior Strategist at SYPartners, where he helped lead executives at IBM, USA TODAY, and Tapestry through large-scale transformation. Prior to SYPartners, James served as the Head of Branding and Creative Direction at Acumen, a nonprofit pioneer of the impact investing industry whose mission is to change the way the world tackles poverty. In this role, he led a rebranding that helped Acumen build a community of over one million followers and elevated its reputation as one of the world's most influential nonprofits.

James has also worked in the development office of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and served as the Director of Business Development for Modea—a digital advertising agency—where he established partnerships with Amazon, Samsung, Mattel, and Johnson & Johnson.

James is a graduate of Virginia Tech where he serves as the President of the Marketing Advisory Board and as a board member for the Pamplin Community for Leadership and Engagement. He has had the honor of guest lecturing for Virginia Tech’s Presidential Global Scholars in Switzerland, Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, John Jay College’s Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Fellows, and Warwick Business School in the United Kingdom.

James led the branding strategy and messaging work for our organization and we now have a clearer, sharper sense of how we convey who we are to the public. He brought a keen eye and ear — and a sense of humor — to the entire process.
